    RIFF wurde 1984 von dem Gitarristen Frank Becking, dem Schlagzeuger Volker Britz und dem Bassisten Burkhard Westerhoff anfangs unter dem Namen The Riffs gegründet. 1986 stieß der aus Newcastle stammende Sänger William Lennox dazu und die Band kürzte den Namen auf "RIFF". Frank Becking hatte schon in verschiedenen Bands gespielt, unter anderem bei "The Ramblers" und „The Stripes" (mit Nena). William Lennox war Sänger der Band „Days of Sorrow" . Anfangs war Frank Becking Leadsänger und Gitarrist. Nachdem William Lennox zur Band gestoßen war nahm die Band für das Label BMG Ariola/RCA das Album Mission Love auf. Produziert wurde in den Eastcote Studios, London vom Produzenten Zeus B. Held. Weiter wurden Remixe einiger Stücke des Albums in den Ardent Studios in Memphis (Tennessee) von John Hampton produziert. Es folgten Auftritte in Deutschland und der Schweiz; unter anderem im Vorprogramm der australischen Band Hoodoo Gurus und der britischen Band New Model Army. Als das Album Mission Love 1989 in Großbritannien auf dem Label "Music For Nations" veröffentlicht wurde, zog die Band von Deutschland nach London. Auch in Großbritannien gab es mehrere Touren, unter anderem mit der US-amerikanischen Band „Drive She Said". In London spielte die Gruppe im "Marquee Club" ,im "Astoria" und im „Hippodrome". Aufnahmen in den berühmten "BBC Radio One Sessions" folgten. Live wurde das Line Up durch den Gitarristen Reinhold Durand und den Keyboarder Frank Junge verstärkt. Das zweite Album wurde in Memphis, TN. in den Ardent Studios von John Hampton produziert. Der Schlagzeuger Volker Britz und der Bassist Burkhard Westerhoff stiegen wegen Differenzen mit Plattenfirma und Management nach dieser Produktion aus der Band aus und wurden durch Thomas Gareth am Bass und Schlagzeuger Rolf Brendel ersetzt. Das Album Fever veröffentlichten sie 1991 unter ihrem neuen Bandnamen Crash n' Burn. Ende 2009 beschlossen William, Burkhard und Volker wieder gemeinsam RIFF zu aktivieren. Schnell stießen Gitarrist Reinhold Durand und Frank Junge wieder dazu. Im März 2011 begann man mit den Aufnahmen zum 3. RIFF-Album. Geplant ist eine Veröffentlichung Mitte 2011. The first line up was made up of Frank Becking (vocals, guitar), Volker Britz (drums) and Burkhard Westerhoff (bass) under the name of The Riffs. Singer William Lennox from Newcastle UK joined the band in 1986. By this time the band name was changed to RIFF. Frank Becking had formerly played in bands such as "The Ramblers" and "The Stripes" (together with Nena). William Lennox had been writing and singing for "Days of Sorrow" . With William Lennox joining, the band soon recorded the album Mission Love on the BMG Ariola/RCA label. The album was produced at Eastcote Studios, London by Zeus. B. Held and mixed by John Hampton at Ardent Studios Memphis, Tennessee. The band went on tour promoting the album in Germany and Switzerland with various gigs supporting the Australian outfit "Hoodoo Gurus" and the British Band "New Model Army". The album "Mission Love" was then released in the UK in the year 1989 on the "Music for Nations" label. This made the band set up their base in London from where they started touring all over Great Britain and playing gigs in the "Marquee", "Astoria" and "Hippodrome" initiating an invite to play and record at the famous "BBC Radio One Sessions". The live set up of the band then saw Reinhold Durand (guitar) and Frank Junge (keyboard) join. The second album took the band to Memphis, Tennessee where John Hampton produced the album "Fever". Soon after the recordings Volker Britz and Burkhard Westerhoff left the band due to disagreements with the management and the record company. A replacement was found in Thomas Gareth (bass) and Rolf Brendel (drums). The album was then released in 1991 under the new band name Crash n' Burn. Again the band toured extensively to promote the album. By the end of 2009 William, Volker and Burkhard got together for a fun jam session and soon felt the need to reform RIFF together with Reinhold Durand and Frank Junge. Song writing and rehearsals began and in March 2011 RIFF once again walked into a studio to record a brand new album which will be released in the summer of 2011.
