Ben Stack

Ben Stack has recorded and toured internationally for more than 25 years, both as a solo artist/songwriter and session guitarist varying in style from Jazz to folk - and almost everything in between. As a result of these widely differing musical experiences, he explores, and often fuses, different aspects of funk, jazz, folk, blues and rock. Switching between acoustic and electric guitars, on which he often uses a variety of stomp boxes and other effects, it is a singular experience to hear the sounds he can produce from an acoustic guitar. He uses about a dozen different tunings and incorporates an highly personal picking style which almost sounds like percussion adding a unique flavor to his sound. The first thing that strikes you when you see Ben live is the sheer energy and personality the man exudes. It's like being taken on a journey that can be anywhere from soothing, to dark, often highly emotional, to down right funky. You never really know what to expect. I'v heard him several times play the same song but one night it's pure jazz and the next it's funk ...or folk .... or an improvisation of where the mood takes him. Even though the scope of his improvisations can take you in many different directions, it's almost impossible not to follow him where ever he takes you. It really amazing to watch people who normally would never listen to jazz or folk become entranced by the hypnotic energy Mr. Stack puts out. The second thing is the way he involves you in an interplay between raw emotion and controlled delivery. Following him as he communicates through his guitar and voice you feel that he's talking to you personally. The list of luminaries he has work with, played with and collaborated with range from John Martyn to Ray Brown.

Ben Stack a enregistré et tourné internationalement pendant plus de 25 ans, en tant qu’artiste auteur-interprète et également que guitariste pour des groupes ou musiciens, dans des styles allant du jazz au folk, en passant par d’autres styles de musique. Fort de ces différentes expériences, il explore et mélange dans ses propres morceaux différents aspects de la funk, du jazz, du folk, du blues et du rock. Alternant entre guitares électriques ou acoustiques, il utilise différents effets, et les sons qu’il en tire sont vraiment surprenants. Il exploite différents tunings, y mêle un style de picking très personnel, parfois proche de percussions ce qui donne à sa musique un son très particulier. La première chose qui vous accroche quand vous voyez Ben Stack jouer live, c’est tout d’abord son énergie et sa personnalité qu’il exulte. Il vous transporte d’une ambiance apaisante vers un univers plus sombre, puis vers quelque chose de plus funky,  mais on se laisse emporter par les émotions qu’il transmet au travers de sa voix, de sa guitare et des ses paroles. D’un concert à l’autre, on ne sait jamais vraiment à quoi s’attendre, si ce n’est d’être emballé par son charisme sur scène : un même morceau peut être du pur jazz un soir, et complètement funk une autre fois, ou folk. Il laisse une large place à l’improvisation, mais d’une certaine façon celle-ci est toujours contrôlée. Il construit ainsi une sorte de tension qui mobilise l’attention de la salle à chaque instant. On a le sentiment qu’il s’adresse à vous, individuellement, et vous emmène avec lui là où son feeling l’emporte. Ben Stack a collaboré avec bon nombre de musiciens fabuleux comme John Martyn, Ray Brown et bien d’autres encore.
