The 24 year-old, multi-talented musician and gifted singer & songwriter Jacob Brass presents his debut album "A Stubborn Child", a collection of songs that are gentle and melodic, honest and mature, and that leave you wanting more. .. .. Brass' musical background is anything but usual: He grew up in a Bavarian village near Munich, his father, Nikolaus Brass, an award-winning composer of modern classical music. There was no radio in the Brass household, and the children were educated to play several instruments at an early age. The only pop records deemed acceptable by Jacob's father were a couple of Beatles LPs, and consequently, this was what Jacob's musical world consisted of in childhood: modern classical music and the Beatles. .. .. When the Britpop wave hit Jacob's hometown, he felt inspired to join a band as a guitar player at the age of 14. It was only by coincidence that he discovered the effect his voice had on an audience: when he was 17, his very first performance as a singer won him first prize in the Acoustic Emergenza competition in Munich, giving him a reputation as one of Munich's greatest talents. As soon as he finished school, he moved to the city, determined to become a musician and singer, stubbornly warding off any suggestions to attempt any other career. "Music simply fulfils me," he says. "I don't really have any other hobbies, and I'm not interested in other jobs. I just am music, and I'm very stubborn in that respect." .. .. In 2007, he met Peter Weihe and Anselm Kluge at Hamburg's notorious pop-music summer course ("Popkurs"), and it was not long before the two introduced him to the Bertram Pohl Foundation and their joint project "Gewächshaus" ("greenhouse"), an initiative to support the independent development of young artists. Jacob was awarded one of the first scholarships, which enabled him to record a studio album just as he pleased – a dream come true. With the producer of his choice, Peter "Jem" Seifert (Udo Lindenberg), he flew over to Abbey Road Studios to record strings for his album – a wonderful way for his music experience to come full circle, and a tremendously awing experience for any musician. Together with Steve Sidwell (Robbie Williams), he co-wrote parts of the string arrangements, and he also played all guitars and guide piano on his album, the vision of creating his very own music always in mind. .. .. The title of this impressive debut can be viewed as a personal epithet: a stubborn child, Jacob Brass voted for pop instead of modern classic, guitar instead of the violin, and music instead of any other form of further education. The title song, "A Stubborn Child", is a deeply moving and personal song about Jacob's coming to terms with his mother's untimely death when he was only a child – even then, the song tells us, Jacob would not let anyone tell him how to lead his life, how to cope with such a loss, how to mourn his own mother. On the album, these deep emotions neighbour on cheerful melodies, on beautiful sing-along tunes that stay with you for a long time, songs you want to hear again and again. "Welcome to my world", Jacob sings on the track "Sunlight," and that's an invitation we will gladly accept. His debut album "A Stubborn Child" is a mature and melodic piece of work, introducing a highly talented singer-songwriter.
