What’s up with musicians being so mysterious? First Jai Paul showed up and teased audiences with a few tracks and no information, and now The Neighbourhood is doing something similar. Still, they’re one we think you should know.

Here’s what we do know: The Neighbourhood are a quintet from Newbury Park, which is west of Thousand Oaks, CA. The group released a track, “Female Robbery,” a few months back that got a bunch of attention, mostly from BBC Radio One.

The group released a second track, “Sweater Weather,” in March. The track was debuted by Zane Lowe on Radio One, who revealed that the band’s frontman is a 20-year-old singer named Jesse James Rutherford.

Recently the group released their debut EP (and some photos that reveal their faces). The disc, called I’m Sorry, was self-released, but rumor has it that record labels are scrounging to the sign the band. You can download the EP for free below:

The movie: Bridesmaids director Paul Feig will direct Sandra Bullock as an FBI agent (for the first time since the Miss Congeniality franchise) and a wildcard Boston cop (McCarthy) as they take down a Russian gangster.
Other projects: Bullock stars opposite George Clooney in the sci-fi thriller Gravity, while McCarthy steals Jason Bateman’s identity in the upcoming comedy Identity Theft.

Tom Cruise set to star in remake of The Magnificent Seven

The movie: A remake of the 1960 classic western, this film will presumably bring together some of the industry’s biggest stars as seven mercenaries hired to protect a small town from bandits. This one is a few years away from production, but Cruise is passionate about it and he’s a big enough name to pull a few favors to get other big names involved when the time comes. Expect this to be huge in, like, 2016.
Other projects: He’s got Rock of Ages out this year, and he’s leading two sci-fi action movies coming soon, All You Need Is Kill and Oblivion.

Robert Pattinson to play a rock star in biopic called The Band

The movie: The movie will tell the story of The Band, which began playing backup for Bob Dylan before blowing up into music legends in their own right. RPattz calls it “a beautiful script about the nature of songwriting.”
Other projects: He’s got David Cronenberg’s bizarre film Cosmopolis out this year, as well as finishing off the Twilight franchise in November.

Jay-Z to write music for a remake of Annie starring Willow Smith

The movie: A new take on the classic musical about a girl who lives at an orphanage, Jay-Z is rumored to be writing all new songs for the project. Willow Smith is taking the lead role, and her dad, Will, is going to be producing the movie while Will’s Men in Black 3 co-star Emma Thompson will be writing the script.
Other projects: All is quiet for Jay in the wake of Watch The Throne, and Willow has finished her run on TV’s “True Jackson, VP” so she doesn’t have anything else lined up yet, either.

Owen Wilson, Brie Larson, Olivia Wilde, and Jason Schwartzman starring in a comedy called Squirrels to the Nuts

The movie: Larson plays a hooker-turned-Broadway actor, Wilson plays a man who pays for her “services” despite being married to the star of her new play, and Wilde will play a therapist. No word yet on Schwartzman’s role, but Wes Anderson fans should know that the director is producing this project alongside fellow indie filmmaker Noah Baumbach.
Other projects: Larson will star with Wilde and Jason Sudeikis in a comedy called Relanxious out next year, while Wilson is returning to action movie mode for The Coup, in which he has to save his family from a local rebellion when they move to a foreign country.

Rupert Grint joins two movies, CBGB and The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman

The movies: CBGB reunites Grint with his Harry Potter co-star Alan Rickman, who plays the owner of the famous CBGB club in New York City. Grint plays Cheetah Chrome, the guitarist for a 1970s punk band called The Dead Boys. The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman stars Shia LaBeouf as a guy who falls for a girl who “belongs” to a crazy mob boss, and it charts the crazy things LaBeouf does to save her. No word yet on what part Grint will play there.
Other projects: He’ll star opposite Chloe Moretz in the Beach Boys biopic The Drummer.

The movie: It tells the true story of Eugene Allen (Forest Whitaker), a White House butler who served under eight Presidents and watched as the country changed dramatically around him during that time. It stars a host of huge talent, including Matthew McConaughey as JFK (Kelly will play his wife), Oprah Winfrey as Allen’s wife, John Cusack as Richard Nixon, Alan Rickman as Ronald Reagan, and Jane Fonda as Nancy Reagan. Terrence Howard is also on board to star.
Where you might have seen her: Minka’s breakout performance was in the TV series “Friday Night Lights,” but she also appeared in the short-lived “Charlie’s Angels” TV reboot.

Saoirse Ronan starring in Testament of Youth

The movie: Ronan will play Vera Brittain, based on the real life story of a World War I nurse who became an author and advocate for peace and feminism after the war ended. (She’ll be able to bust out that British accent again.)
Where you might have seen her: She’s had some big roles, but I’d yet to call her a household name. She starred in Hanna, Atonement, and will appear in the upcoming Stephenie Meyer adaptation The Host.

The movie: Taking its name from the movie trope of their being one last girl left alive in horror movies, Final Girl will star Breslin in a thriller about a group of feral teenage boys who pick the wrong girl to mess with in their final “initiation.”
Where you might have seen her: Breslin starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs but really made her mark in Little Miss Sunshine, and has since appeared in Zombieland and one of my personal favorite romantic comedies, Definitely, Maybe.

Taran Killam joins the cast of Steve McQueen’s Twelve Years A Slave

The movie: Serenity star Chiwetel Ejiofor will take the lead as an educated man who is sold into slavery for twelve years, and Killam plays a traveling circus worker who abducts him. Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, and Paul Dano also star, so this should be a good one.
Where you might have seen him: He’s on “Saturday Night Live,” and now that a lot of the big name cast members are leaving, he could be one of the next big names to emerge from the show.

will.i.am has released a brand new video for his track “This Is Love, a track from his upcoming solo disc #willpower that was produced by Steven Angello. In the clip, which features Eva Simons, will.i.am plays piano in front of London’s Tower Bridge, Skypes with an excited audience and lets his computer get awfully wet in a rainy deluge.

The video starts out during the day, as a red-suited will.i.am sings and plays piano in front of the bridge. On his nearby laptop, Simons croons the chorus while an audience rages in a club. As the video continues, the night and the rain fall on London and that laptop gets pretty wet (still appears to work though). Later a string quartet appears and we get sucked into the crowd in the club, which is full of women whose tops all appear to be falling off. Is there a story? Depends on how you define story. What do you think? We like the London setting and will.i.am looks surprisingly classy in that red suit. But what’s really going on here? Will it surprise you to learn that will.i.am directed this video himself? He tweeted, “iamsoproud because thisislove is the 2nd video I directed…the 1st was ‘where is the love’ 10years ago…” He added in an interview with Capital FM, “The first place that I ever had success was here in the U.K. and it was a song called ‘Where Is The Love?’. M.I.A. has joined the roster of Jay-Z’s Roc Nation management company. The label announced the news on Twitter by writing “The nation just keeps growing” along with a photo of the singer. Rihanna, who is also signed to Roc Nation, tweeted, “Welcome home MIA.” The singer, who is working on a new album tentatively titled, Matangi, remains signed with Interscope so it’s unclear exactly how this deal will shift M.I.A.’s career path. Hardcore punk band TRC has signed with No Sleep Records. The London band will record a new album this fall. No Sleep president Chris Hansen said in a statement, “Ever since i started No Sleep i have been looking for a good mix of Hardcore and Metalcore to bring to this label, and when my good friends from another Southern California label showed me TRC I fell in love. They create what i think is a perfect blend of Hardcore, Metalcore (and a dash of The Streets – an all-time fave of mine) with a hint of British cockiness that i love. Razor & Tie has added Defiler to its roster. The Northern California group is currently making a new album, which will be released later this year. Lead singer Jake Pelzl said, “Words cannot describe how excited I am about signing with Razor & Tie. I’ve always had massive respect for the label, because of the diverse roster and bands I love, and they’re just the greatest people ever. I feel like the new album is a true showcase to what all of us can do as a band. We’re going further with the melody, the brutality; I’m playing around with lots of different lyrical ideas. Matchbox Twenty – North (Atlantic, September 4)

Matchbox Twenty will release their first full-length album in a decade this fall. The disc’s first single, “She’s So Mean,” will be out in June. Band member Paul Doucette said of the disc, “The title refers to us finding our way. We went into this record with a lot of material. Many different songs that could have taken us in many different directions. It sort of overwhelmed us for a bit. But, at a certain point, we figured it out. We figured out where North was.”

When you think of an American hero does your mind immediately go to Wiz Khalifa? If so, then the rapper’s new video for “Work. Hard, Play Hard” is for you.

In the clip, which jumps from various blue collar jobs, Khalifa reveals the American dream, to toil hard and party harder. In the first half of the video slow-motion images of factory workers, construction workers and prospective athletes sift through the grunt work of trying to succeed at their jobs. Later, they all join up at a big party where Khalifa is the ringleader who hocks “Taylor Gang Or Die” shirts and gets soaked with alcohol.

The message? It’s not exactly clear, although we’d venture a guess that this is just Khalifa’s direct interpretation of the title of his song. Plus, the rapper hails from Pittsburgh, which is a heavily industrial town so certainly he has some experience seeing people work hard. Khalifa seems to be saying he just wants to make sure they party even harder. Watch below:

This message appears to relate to the rapper’s own life as well. Yesterday he tweeted, “I Been On A Plane All Day, Haven’t Slept In A Bed In Weeks, Still Got The Same Clothes On From A Few Days Ago #WorkHardPlayHard.”

This track is the first single off the rapper’s upcoming new disc, O.N.I.F.C., which is due out August 28. The album will feature production from Will.I.Am, Pharrell and Benny Blanco, and will feature guest verses from 50 Cent, the Weeknd, 2 Chainz and Taylor Gang’s new addition First Lady Lola Monroe.

And I definitely noticed that there’d be scenes where you’d be just kind of, like, fade-in, fade-out and then, you know, time would lapse almost like in a found footage film but kind of, like you said, almost kind of documentary-style as well.
.
Yeah, exactly. And for example, when they’re traveling from Kiev to Pripyat…
.
Right.
.
OREN PELI: …we kind of go in them to the car and as long as they’re in the car, we stay in the car with them the whole time. There’s never, like, an outside shot from an unknown point of view. It’s like you were always there with the group so we feel like, you know, we’re kind of going along on the journey with them.
.
Something I didn’t know a ton about until reading about this movie and then seeing the movie was the whole kind of subculture of extreme tourism. Is that something you’re into at all or is it just kind of something you found that tied in nicely to the story?
.
Yeah. I wouldn’t say that I’m particularly into it. I mean, I’ve done a few things. I went skydiving once and I went swimming with sharks but I’m not particularly a thrill seeker.
.
I see.
.
I think also the older you get, the more you want just, like, a relaxing vacation. But the thing in particular about Pripyat is I didn’t even know until I started looking into it, there is a way for people to go into the Chernobyl and, you know, tour and I found that it’s, like, really fascinating that you can do it safely, supposedly (laughs) and this was kind of, like, the first thing that started investigating and I thought, well, what would I do if I was in the same situation? Would I be inclined to go on this kind of a tour?
.
Yeah. That was totally something I did not realize either, was that you could actually visit this city. Now I know you guys shot in other locations but, you visited Pripyat before researching?
.
So originally what we wanted to do, we were thinking about going there for research…
.
Yeah.
.
…and we even wanted to shoot part of the movie there. Like, why not? Your fear of the location’s there, it’s already there, and for whatever reason, the Ukrainian government stopped allowing people to go on those tours in 2011. Now they opened it again. Now you can go back. But during the time that we were developing the movie, they wouldn’t let anyone in and we didn’t know, should we wait? For how long is it going to be? Is it going to be a few months? Is it forever? So we had to have a different plan and that’s when we found the locations that we ended up shooting in Serbia and Hungary and using CGI and set dressing, we kind of managed to recreate it fairly accurately.
.
Well, it definitely looks very similar. I mean, when I got home after watching the movie last night, I kind of did some Googling and then it was, like, I’d seen pictures. It was like, oh, it looks like they actually shot there and then, you know, you read the notes and it’s like, oh, they didn’t.
.
Yeah. It was very important for us and for Brad ’cause, you know, the city of Pripyat is basically like the main character in the movie, and so it was very important for us to kind of capture the look and the feel of the location.
.

.
Now obviously Paranormal Activity’s kind of more towards the supernatural side of horror and this is kind of a little bit different. Does one scare you more than the other, you know, post-apocalyptic nuclear fallout versus ghosts, haunted spirits, whatnot?
.
Well, I think it’s all scary. It all can kill you…
.
That’s true. (laugh)
.
…so it’s all scary. But I think the common theme that they have is sort of, like, the fear of the unknown. Both in the case of, you know, let’s say you’re at home and you’re dealing with a haunting or if you’re finding yourself stranded in a desolate town in the middle of a radioactive, you know, zone and then you hear a scream or something human or inhuman from far away in the middle of the night, you have the same feeling of, like, what is that? What is that thing that I’m dealing with? Is it something good or something bad? Does it want to hurt me? How can I defend myself against it? And what the hell is it anyways?
.
So, to me, that kind of, like, dealing with something unknown…like, if there was, you know, a crazy guy, you know, with a knife over there I’m like, okay, this is scary. I’m going to run the other way.
.
But when you’re dealing with something you don’t know where it is, you don’t know what it wants from you, there’s something about it that’s very unsettling to me.
.
Yeah. And I mean, that’s something I notice, you don’t necessarily ever get, like, a super clear 10 seconds on the creature, whatever the things are, it’s more kind of implied.
.
To me, it’s always scarier not really seeing the monster, quote-unquote and not really knowing exactly what you’re dealing with. You definitely see more here than you would in the Paranormal Activity movie where you know, the thing that has to be invisible by nature. So here it would have been too much a cheat now to show them at all but we feel, like, you know, the fact that you don’t know what they look like and you don’t know what they are is actually can be scarier than seeing them too well.
.
Right. And I think it’s kind of captured some realism because, kind of like what you were saying with the knife guy, if I saw one of those monsters there, I wouldn’t be staring at it for 10 seconds.
.
Yeah. You’re going to be running the other way (laughs).
.
Could you talk a little bit about your influences growing up and some of your favorite horror movies and then, if you have influences outside the genre that have shaped you as a filmmaker?
.
Well, I would say that the one movie that’s really horrified me and terrified me more than any other was The Exorcist, which I watched when I was a kid and it traumatized me so much to the point that for the rest of my childhood, even into my teems, I couldn’t watch anything that had to do with ghosts or demons. Even when Ghostbusters came out, I couldn’t watch that. I’m not even kidding you about it. I was like, so horrified.
.
I couldn’t handle anything in that space. So, and then later on when I kind of gotten over it when I got older, I got back into watching horror movies. And the kind of movies that I really love are the ones that, not necessarily the slasher movies, the movies that kind of take their time so I’m thinking about, like, and some of the Hitchcock movies, movies like Rosemary’s Baby and, you know, The Sixth Sense, The Others and, of course, Blair Witch Project, which was really kind of, like, you know, the one movie that influenced me more than anything else because it showed how you can use the found footage format effectively to create a very scary horror movie.
.
Yeah. And I think you see that in this movie. It’s kind of more a slow build as opposed to just the typical slasher film.
.
Right.
.
Well that’s interesting. I wouldn’t have guessed that you, as a child after seeing The Exorcist, you weren’t really a horror junkie growing up?
.
No. I was the opposite! I was afraid of horror movies and I stayed away from them.
.

.
Now I know with the cast, there was a lot of improvisation with the dialogue.
.
Yeah.
.
Was that your decision? Was that Brad’s decision? Was it just kind of, like, did it come naturally?
.
It was all of us. When we met Brad, we told him that one of the important things that we want to do is to create that kind of pseudo-documentary style without it being found footage. So we all got on the same page that we didn’t want it to feel like actors reading lines.
.
We wanted it to feel like almost they’re real characters that we’re bringing to life. And it was very important to us during the testing process that we find the kind of actors that can feel very natural and can improvise. So during the auditions, we wouldn’t even give them any scripts to read or any scenes. We would just put them on the spot and put them in a fake scenario that they weren’t prepared for and see how they kind of handle it without any preparation.
.
And the actors that we ended up with were absolutely phenomenal in that. And then when it come times to shoot the movie, in many cases they were either totally improvising or sometimes the actual dialogue in the script, what we would do is we would do rehearsals or sometimes even from the casting sessions, we would let them as a group improvise. We would always videotape it and we would transcribe their improvised dialogue into the script. So their own improvisation became the script, which is then what we stuck to and that’s why it felt very natural because it was actually their own words.

Now, Paranormal Activity 4, that’s been confirmed, correct?
.
The only thing I can say about Paranormal Activity 4 is that it’s been confirmed for October 19th.

Okay. Last question, what kind of music are you into?
.
I listen to a lot of stuff. I would say mostly I listen to, like, ’80s and techno and classical music.

The Chernobyl diaries opens May 25th, 2012.

Synopsis: Chernobyl Diaries” is an original story from Oren Peli, who first terrified audiences with his groundbreaking thriller “Paranormal Activity.” The film follows a group of six young tourists who, looking to go off the beaten path, hire an “extreme tour guide.” Ignoring warnings, he takes them into the city of Pripyat, the former home to the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, but a deserted town since the disaster more than 25 years ago. After a brief exploration of the abandoned city, however, the group soon finds themselves stranded, only to discover that they are not alone…

Pusha T seems to be instigating some feuds this weeks. On a new track, “Exodus 23:1,” which features The-Dream, Pusha takes some shots at Drake and Chicago producer Young Chop. But it’s Lil Wayne who is taking issue to the song.

On the track Pusha raps, “Beef is when you hide behind them other ni**as / But they ain’t killers, they ain’t pullin’ them triggers, fuck ni**as.” He later adds, “Contract all fucked/Explain up I guess that means you all fucked up/You signed to one ni**a that signed to another ni**a that’s signed to three ni**as/Now that’s bad luck.” This apparently did not please Weezy, who tweeted in response, “Fuk pusha t and anybody that love em.”

Why is Wayne mad? Because those lines about contracts allegedly reference Drake’s recording contract with Lil Wayne and his labels Cash Money and Universal Music. And, worse, the pair of rappers have a past history of beef. Both rappers went back and forth in 2006 and 2007 and eventually continued the feud until last year when Pusha squashed any ill will towards Weezy in an interview with Complex. It looks like the beef is starting up again.

As for Young Chop, who previously who had a short tiff with Kanye West using his beat on Chief Keef’s “I Don’t LIke” remix, also tweeted against Pusha. He wrote, “Fuck (Pusha T) am on that. Am on that with yo bicth ass @PUSHA_T.” This appears to be in response to Pusha’s line, “You can keep your beats, ni**a/We’d much rather share your bitch, ni**a, bitch ni**a.”
